The Arribes del Duero Nature Reserve extends over an area of more than 40956.53 square miles to the west of Salamanca and Zamora provinces, along the Portuguese border, acting as natural frontier. It is a vast bordering territory, deeply marked by the Duero river course. The most notable characteristic of this Natural Space is the undoubtedly grandiose landscape of its precipitous valleys. It is a spectacular natural scenario artistically designed by the different courses of water travelling stealthily across its fertile valleys.
In addition, Arribes del Duero is a singular natural garden that lodges more than 20 natural habitats of communitarian interest. Its forests deserve a special mention since they are made up of Mediterranean species like the cork oak, the juniper, the nettle tree, the maple or wild olive tree, usually accompanied by other excellent flowers. In terms of fauna wealth, there are more than 230 species of vertebrates registered, being most of them birds. Within this group, we could stand out genus Rupicola birds, that usually make their nests in the rocks, and specially the Eurasian griffon, the Egyptian vulture, the real eagle, the real owl or the black stork. They are undoubtedly the authentic gods of this natural sanctuary and the reason why this beautiful spot was declared ZEPA (Special Protection Area for Birds) in 1991.
