FAUNA

Thanks to its special environmental conditions, the Arribes del Duero Nature Reserve shelters a great number of species endangered of extinction. This is the reason why it has been declared a Special Protection Area for birds (ZEPA).

The conservation of their habitats, either in the inaccessible valleys or in the plains, makes life possible for a great number of bird specimens (black stork, Egyptian vulture, Eurasian griffon, vulture, real swift), birds of prey (golden eagle, Bonelli's eagle or real owl), mammals (wild cat, fox, genet, badger, otter, wild boar, bats), rodents (Garden dormouse) and fish.

FLORA

The Arribes del Duero Nature Reserve constitutes one of the largest botanical reserves in Castilla y León. It concentrates a wide variety of vegetable specimens representing the variety of ecosystems of the region.

The orographic difference, the climate and the greater or smaller alteration of the landscape allow us to differentiate the typical species from the canyon, from other ones from the bank, river sides and traditionally Mediterranean .

It is important to point out the flora from the peneplain such as: sessile oak and holm oak woods together with different species of brushes as brooms, shrubs, lavenders and thyme.

Traditionally Mediterranean are the cork trees, junipers, hackberries, gall-oaks; a great variety of brushes as strawberry-trees, blackthorns, hawthorns and numerous types of flowered plants as peonies, maiden pinks, wild jasmine or delphiniums among others.

Apart from that, we can find a great variety of Mediterranean crops, in terraces in the slopes of the Arribes area, as for example vines, olive, orange, lemon, almond trees and prickly pears.
